In the era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing updating rate of knowledge, it is regarded necessary for the faculty of colleges and universities to spend time to work outside academic profession relevant to courses they teach. However, the crucial task of colleges is to cultivate a new generation but not practical production. It is important to call for a balance in working outside and instruction.

Until effectively applied to practical life, knowledge can show its value, otherwise it is worthless. The society of those day is an age of knowledge exploderation(知识爆炸的时代) and every day there are all kinds of new methods, new materials, new products emerging like the bamboo after the a spring rain. Especially, for instance, in the field of IT, the accumulation of knowledge doubles during several months. When turning on a textbook that was in use several years ago, one will realize that there has been later information or methods taking the place of knowledge and views out of date or making up for former deficiency. Since the late development and trends of future will all be reflected in practice, for undergraduates and graduates, it is essential to follow the latest technology relevant to their fields. Then for the teachers it is considered an indispensable approach to work outside and master the freshest relevant knowledge in order to accomplish perfectly.

In addition, contacting with society can help to adjust the research and instruction. Take my major, membrane structure as an example. In China, fabric structure is just in its initial state and many companies are not well developed in design and construction. Sometime ago, my supervisor and I participated the whole course of one of membrane structure projects. Through thorough investigation during the period, we know what is most necessary for practice and then adjust my research task, making it match the needs of society.

However, in China, there is a proverb, saying that going too far is as bad as not going far enough, which means that redundantly outside working may do harm to instruction. As one of celebrated professors once said (and I paraphrase): More and more limousines entered the serene campus, more and more money enter the burse of professors while lower and lower the research level becomes.’ This illustrates vividly the side effect of work outside. A lot of companies are willing to cooperate with college, for the leading class realizes the power of knowledge. The professor offer technology to companies and at the same time the companies not only provide research outlay to college but pay considerable money to individual as reward sometime which is even more than their salary at college because in china at present, the system of education and other mechanism is not so well improved. And as a result, a minority of teachers cannot resist the tempest of devotion of material things and a love of comfort, then they devote most time and energy to earn money but have no interests in teaching and research.

Generally speaking, it is in the colleges where the natural laws is studied, according to which how to apply to practice is researched and while it is in factories, where the technology applied to practice turns into value and at the same time, assesses research fruits, feeds back problems existing and adjusts research direction. Either of the two parts above is supplement to each other and will be bogged down without each other. So the best way is to find a balanced point between them, and instruct more effectively with assistant of working experience
