Would you like John or Mary to go with you to Repulse Bay?
你喜歡約翰或瑪麗陪你去淺水灣還是你自己一個人去?

   這一句不能譯作:"你喜歡約翰陪你去還是瑪麗陪你去淺水灣?" 如要表達此意, 應該說:
   Would you like John, or Mary, to go with you to Repulse Bay?

   請注意這個句子在John和Mary之后都有逗號. 用了逗號后,
 表示提問人心中已知對方希望有人陪同他去, 至于希望誰陪同還未肯定, 故提此問, 征求對方意見.
   第一句在John和Mary之后不用逗號, 涵義也就大不相同.
它表示提問人想征求對方這樣的意見:"是希望John或Mary兩人當中有一個人陪他去?
還是不用人陪他去, 他自己一個人去."
   從上面兩個問句的對比, 我們可以看到標點符號在句中所起的重要作用.

   現在請仔細觀察下面的類例:

Be good children.  
你們要做個乖孩子.
(比較) Be good, children.
        孩子們, 好好玩, 別吵鬧.

Turn the heat rays on, John.
約翰, 把熱射線打開.
(比較) Turn the heat rays on John.
        請把熱射線對著約翰.

However, it may be the responsibility is entirely our own.
然而, 有可能, 責任應該完全由我們自己負.
(比較) However it may be, the responsibility is entirely our own.
        不管怎樣, 責任應該完全由我們自己負.

If she plans to be married, before she is eighteen she should have started a hopechest. --C.C. Fries
如果想結婚, 她在十八歲前就應該准備嫁妝了.
(比較) If she plans to be married before eighteen, she should have started a hopechest.
 如果她想在十八歲以前結婚, 她早就應該准備嫁妝了.
