Research by scientists in the United States suggests that llamas might hold a key to the development of a universal influenza vaccine.

According to a paper published this month in the journal Science, the researchers isolated antibodies from immunized llamas that are effective against a wide variety of both A and B influenza strains in experiments on mice.

The researchers concluded that if the protective effect they found in mice translates to humans, it opens the door to the possibility that an annual dose of a nasal spray drug could provide protection against the flu for an entire season. It could also provide a rapid response in the event of an influenza pandemic.
