Christian Lindmeier, the spokesperson of the World Health Organization (WHO) reaffirmed June 16 that sustained human-to-human transmission and community transmission of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in South Korea had not yet been observed.

世界卫生组织发言人克里斯蒂安·林德梅尔16日重申，并未观察到韩国中东呼吸综合征具备可持续的人际传播能力与社区传播能力。

这里的人际传播指的是人与人之间的传染，我们可以用human-to-human transmission/interpersonal transmission表示。有说法称，MERS病毒是从动物传染给人（transmission from animals to humans）的病毒，但具体感染源（source of infection）尚不明确。不同病毒的传播方式也有所不同，比如流感病毒可以通过空气传播（air-borne transmission），埃博拉病毒则通过体液传播（body-fluid transmission），有些病毒会在动物与人之间传播（animal-to-human transmission），而有些只会在人际传播（human-to-human transmission）。

针对韩国中东呼吸综合征疫情中多个“第四代感染病例”（fourth generation infection cases）等最新情况，林德梅尔表示，目前这种病毒只在医院（hospital settings）及其藏身临近环境中传播。据统计，截至16日，韩国中东呼吸综合征的实验室确诊病例（laboratory-confirmed cases）为154例，其中18人不治身亡。

对于韩国的疫情，世卫组织虽不建议在总体上实施旅行或贸易限制（travel or trade restrictions），但应禁止任何疑似患者或出现感染冠状病毒症状的人外出旅行，并对其进行隔离观察（quarantine）和治疗。
