　 「加州旅馆」是流行音乐史上的一首摇滚经典，这首歌曲于1976年推出以后，不仅很快的占据排行榜冠军，也使得老鹰合唱团在美国的地位更加巩固，乐评界一致称许该团为美国本土最伟大的摇滚乐团。
    写作并主唱这首歌的团员唐亨利表示，歌词内容是反映他们生活在好莱坞必须面对的残酷现实，那段日子对他们而言，每天都像是万圣节一样，充满了性、毒品与精神上的各种试炼。然而，这首长达六分多钟的作品，在当时却引起许多卫道人士的攻讦，原因是经过六十年代越战以及嬉皮运动启蒙的美国社会，风气日渐开放，吸食大麻、迷幻药以追求自我解放的年轻人日益增多，流行音乐界有许多艺人靠着迷幻药来寻找创作灵感，更是做了最不良的示范。70年代的美国乐坛，就有好几位重量级的艺人因为吸食过量而毙命，包括「门户合唱团」（The Doors）的主唱吉姆莫里森（Jim Morrison）、吉米罕醉克斯（Jimi Hendrix）、珍妮丝贾普琳（Janis Joplin）。许多卫道人士忧心世风败坏，纷纷指陈摇滚乐腐蚀人心，教唆青少年吸毒犯罪，呼吁电台禁播这类歌曲，甚至在街头当众销毁大批的摇滚唱片。「加州旅馆」这首当红的歌，成了众矢之的，卫道者指责这首歌，就是在描述一个吸毒者的天堂，是撒旦的大本营。
    事过境迁，这首歌的魅力不曾稍减，经过时间的沉淀，它成为西洋音乐中一首不可不听的杰作，末尾那一段双吉他的演奏尤其成为典范，更动任何一个音符，都会影响其精彩的程度。
    这么经典的一首作品，却很少有人翻唱，原因是想演绎出另一种风味，实在太难（国内歌手齐秦曾翻唱）。1994年，在1980年初即解散的五位团员再次重组，举办了一场复出演唱会，用「不插电」（Unplugged）的方式重新诠释了这首曲子，获得满堂喝采，也只有他们自己才能超越老鹰合唱团。而这场演唱会的实况录音，后来发行上市，专辑名称「Hell freezes over」，台湾的代理公司翻为「永远不可能的事」，除了演奏演唱十分精采，CD及DVD均是录音奇佳的发烧名盘，音响迷们人手一张，以考验自己的音响系统，喜爱老鹰的乐迷当然更不能错过。
