　80年代，世纪黑死病AIDS的出现，震惊了全世界，及至1999年的年终，全球医学界依然没有研究出治愈这种疾病的方法。感染到AIDS的病患，等于被宣判了死刑。
　感染AIDS的高危险群，初期的调查报告多为同性恋者与吸毒者。很不幸的，在爱滋病例被发现后，西洋流行歌坛即有一些著名艺人因此病而过世，例如皇后合唱团（ Queen ）的主唱 Freddy Mercury。
　从事演艺工作者的确有些人在功成名就之后，私生活较为糜烂，但往者已矣，事后再以道德批判的眼光来看待往生者，根本无济于事。1985年，黑人女歌星狄翁渥薇克（惠妮休斯顿的姑姑）决定为病逝的歌坛友人做些事情，她和史提夫汪德、艾尔顿强和葛莱迪丝奈特（ Gladys Knight）等几位大牌歌星联合义唱了一首单曲" That's what friends are for"，以悼念死去的歌坛战友，期盼唤醒人们对防治爱滋病的重视，单曲的销售所得并悉数做为爱滋病防治基金。
