fallacious adj. 错误的,谬误的
首先看该词中含有我们熟悉的单词fall, fall的基本意思:掉下来,摔跟斗;人生难免摔跟斗,犯错误;所以英文中含有fall有错误的意思,大家可以联系下相关词汇false, fault, faulty; 其实fallacious 来自名词fallacy (错误,谬误),fallacy 可以理解为fall+acy, -acy 一般是表示名词的后缀。顺带扩充下fallible(容易犯错的)infallible(永不犯错的)。大家知道美语里面fall还有秋天的意思,为什么呢?秋天果实成熟了,就要fall(掉下来)了.
consensus n. 共识
这个词一看三部分 con-, -sens-,-us. 大家知道英文中co系列的前缀指的是together 一起的意思,包括co-, con-, com-, cor-等形式。Sense 本身也是一个单词,表示‘感觉’等意思。-us做后缀一般表示名词,如status(地位)。所以整个词consensus表示大家都感觉是一致的,共识。英文中-sens- 和 –sent- 作为词根都表示“sense”。更多单词如:sensible, sensitive, consent(同意),resent(反感),sentiment(情感), sentimental(多愁善感的), presentiment(预感) 等。
discordant adj 不和的 不调和的
同样该词由三部分构成;dis-表示否定;-cord-作为词根表示“心”,-ant-一般是形容词或名词结尾。大家可以联想下core(核心),concord(协和),accord(一致),dicord (不和),其实英语中-card-也可表示“心”; electrocardiogram大家能猜到意思吗?心电图。
embellish vt 美化,装饰
em-前缀,表示外面outsite, 英文中ex-相关的前缀很多,表示outside, 或者说当我们看到e开头的单词基本都包含这个意思。中间这个-bell-联系一下belle (美丽,美女) 到处能看到百丽的广告“因为百丽,所以美丽”。百丽的英文标志为belle. –ish 很好理解,作为后缀表示动词、名词、形容词都有可能。如finish, establish, diminish等等。
