1) 首先，判断某些生词有没有进行精确猜测的必要。 例如：We had little food with us, only a few biscuits and some chocolate. 此句中，假设biscuits是生词，那么我们无法准确地说出它的意思是什么，但是我们能够知道它与chocolate同属于food这一义域，不再追究它的精确含义也不会影响对基本句意的理解。 2) 根据词性或构词法作出判断。 例如：He fished out an old book from the bag. 此句中的fish一词可能令人费解。如果分析一下句子成分，就不难看出它是表示一种动作的动词，加上out的词义，我们大体上能猜出fish out是“掏出”的意思。再如： Will you honour me with a visit? 此句中的honour用作动词，很容易猜出意为“使增光”，所以整个句子应理解为“可否请您 光临?“ 3) 根据句子中的同义、反义、同等、同位关系作出判断。 例1 The boy works very hard, and his sister is also diligent.该句中的also使我们知道diligent应与work hard同义。 例2 Unlike his brother, who is truly a handsome man, John is quite homely. 该句中unlike是关键词，它说明John与他们的兄弟情况相反。据此可知handsome与homely是反义词，从而推断出homely应为“相貌平平”之意。 例3 Not every car, bus, jeep or other kinds of vehicle can be made in the factory. 分析这一句子我们可以知道，“other kinds of vehicle”与car、bus、jeep同作主语，属并列关系，故vehicle一词应与car、bus、jeep属同一义域“地上交通工具”。 例4 Pandas, tie bear like animal, live only in China. 这一句中的pandas与the bear like animal属同位关系。据此可知panda是“一种像熊的动物”，根据句子谓语部分又知它“仅生长在中国”，所以panda，意为“大熊猫”。 4) 根据文中对某一生词的直接或间接解释来弄清该词的含义。 例如：She had a lesion on her arm that would not stop bleeding一句中lesion假定为生词，我们则可根据后面修饰它的定语从句所提供的意思“血流不止”来推知lesion为“伤口”之意。 5) 根据因果关系猜测词义 一定的原因导致一定的结果，原因和结果之间自有逻辑上的联系。因此，原因不清楚可以根据结果部分来推断，结果部分语义不明则可根据原因部分来分析。 例如：The noise was so faint that it was impossible to be sure what it was or even where it came from. 句中结果部分说“无法确定这是什么声音，甚至无法确定它来自哪儿”，而faint就是其原因，于是便可推知faint意为“微弱”。 6) 依靠常识和经验来推测语义。 例如：If you want our land to keep fertile, you must try to stop soil from being carried away by water or winds. When soil is taken away by flowing water or blowing winds, we call it soil erosion. 这几句话描述了我们熟知的一种自然现象。所有内容实际上是对soil erosion的解释。由解释语义我们便知道了soil erosion就是我们所说的“土壤侵蚀”。 7) 对有领悟性困难的段落的推测 由于某些词的意思不明，而造成个别段落的意思也模糊不清，这是阅读中常遇到的。解决这一问题较好的方法是：读完全文之后对不明白的段落反复阅读。一般地说，多次阅读的过程是逐步加深理解的过程。对于一些难懂的句子，如能结合上下文反复推敲，同时联系到作者的写作意图及全文的中心思想，仍可猜出它的意思。 例如下面一段： I enjoyed the football games, but it was such a wet windy day that I caught cold, so I’m feeling a little under the weather now. I think I have to go to bed early.在句中有一个短语a little under the weather可能造成整段意思不清楚，但根据上下文中的caught cold和have to go to bed early加以推测，得出结论是a little under the weather可能是not well之意.
