Get/Take Some Stick
Jo: Welcome to another Real English programme from BBC Learning English. I'm Jo.
Lily: And I'm Lily.
Jo: Well, today's expression is to get, or to take, some stick S.T.I.C.K.
Jo: Well if you take some stick or get some stick for something it means you will be criticised or laughed at for something that you do.
Lily: 当你的举止受到某人的批评或嘲讽的时候,就可以说 to get 或 take stick from someone. Is that right?
Jo: Yes that's right. It often means though that you will be laughed at or criticised in a humorous way but it can also, at times, be serious.
Jo: Well, for example, if a colleague or friend wears something a bit unfashionable – you might make a joke and give them a bit of stick.
Let's hear some more examples.
Example
A: Did you have a good day at work?
B: No I decided to make an effort and wear a tie to work – and I got a right load of stick for it.
A: So England lost the rugby again?
B: Yeah they haven't been playing very well and the manager has had to take a lot of stick.
Jo: So in the last example there you can see that it can be used in a serious way – a manager or company or politician could take some stick for something they have done.
