说起办公室里secretary，可能我们首先反应出的意思都是“秘书”，不过secretary可不仅仅有这一层意思，例如遇到下面这个句子要注意了：

"I chose the tall secretary where mother sat so often writing letters by a sunny window."

译这句话时要格外小心，否则就会把tall secretary译成了高个子秘书，岂不闹出笑话？

其实secretary在这里是一种书写的桌子，一般上面还附有一个小书架，所以全话的意思是：

“我选择了那个高大的写字桌，过去每逢阳光明媚的日子，妈妈常坐在窗前的桌旁写信。”

Secretary的意思还是很多的，除了常见的“秘书”之外，它还可以指“书记”，如：

中共中央总书记 the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China

省委书记 Secretary of a provincial Party Committee

书记处 secretariat（secretary的变体）

秘书长的顺序正好和总书记倒过来，是secretary—general, 如：

联合国秘书长 the Secretary General of the United Nations

还有许多职务从中文字面看并没有“秘书”字样，但英语仍需用secretary，如：

美国国务卿 the Secretary of State

美国财政部长 the Secretary of Treasury

美国教育部长 the Secretary of Education

美国国防部长 the Secretary of Defense

最后我们来说说，办公室的秘书还可以怎么说呢？有一种不太常用的说法，叫做girl Friday，它大概是从man Friday演化而来的。英国小说家笛福写了本《鲁宾逊漂流记》，男主角的仆人就叫man Friday。
