魏晋时代，富贵人家喜欢斗有钱斗奢华。当时有七月七日晒衣习俗，贫寒的名士阮咸见达官贵人都趁这机会炫耀纱罗锦绮，于是以“未能免俗”为名，用竹竿挑一短裤在院子里晒，“人或怪之”(《世说新语·任诞》)。他们感到奇怪是很自然的事:家无锦衣这样的“丑事”，一般人是不会外扬的。


在英国，“人或怪之”的会是wash one's dirty linen in public。按linen是亚麻布造的衣物，“当众洗骯脏衣物”，对英国人来说，等于家丑外扬了，例如:

Diana openly dwelled on her extramarital relationships with such gusto that she evidently had no scruples whatever about washing her dirty linen in pubic.
(戴安娜公开详谈自己的私情，谈得那么津津有味，显然是完全不怕家丑外扬的了）。
