The Patriot《爱国者》(精讲之六)BURWELL: Where is he? I'll help you bury him.

MARTIN: I'll bury him.

BURWELL: My wife in Alexandria is with child. My first. I'll fight for that child. Benjamin, nothing will replace your sons. But if you come with us, you can justify their sacrifice.

MARTIN: Why? Why do men feel they can justify death? Is it arrogance or... I have long feared that my sins would return to visit me. And the cost is more than I can bear.

BURWELL: Benjamin, we have a chance. Greene and Dan Morgan are down for Virginia. If we win this next battle, victory in the war is within our grasp.

MARTIN: Go, then. Seek your victory. I'm small issue to it.

BURWELL: You're wrong Benjamin. You matter to your men and to others as well. Your victories and your losses are shared by more than you know. Stay with us. Stay the course.

MARTIN: I have run my course.

BURWELL: You men will be leaving with us.

DELANCEY: Yes. Prepare the baggage.

BURWELL: Jean.

BURWELL: Tomorrow's battle can alter the course of the war. General Greene, what exactly is the task before us?

GREENE: Gentlemen, Cornwallis has us cornered. Not only does he outnumber us but nearly half of our force is militia. Unreliable, at best.

MARTIN: Excuse me, sir. I believe you underestimate our militia. All of you do.

GREENE: We've seen our militia lines break time and again. Kips Bay, Princeton.

MARTIN: But the British have seen that too. Corwallis' own letters bear out he has no respect for the militia now and so ever.

BURWELL: What are you suggesting, Ben?

MARTIN: I'm suggesting we use that.

1. With child

She's with child.

My wife is expecting again.

2. Stay the course

意为“Hold or persevere to the end 坚持到底”,例如:No, he's not resigning; he's going to stay the course.

3. Time and again

Time and time again I warned her to stop smoking.

类似意思的表达还有time after time,again and again。

4. Bear out

“证实,证明”的意思,例如:The results bear out what he predicted.

人物:Nathanael Greene & Daniel Morgan

1. Nathanael Greene

The Patriot《

Charles Willson Peale painted a portrait of General Greene from life in 1783, which was then copied several times by C.W. Peale and his son, Rembrandt Peale.

American Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene (1742-1786) was considered "the greatest military genius of the war." His chief contribution to the American victory lay in his brilliant southern campaign.

An iron founder, he became active in colonial politics and served (1770-72, 1775) in the Rhode Island assembly. At the beginning of the American Revolution he commanded a detachment of militia at the siege of Boston and was in charge of the city after the British evacuation (1776). Greene helped plan the defense of New York (1776), but illness kept him from the battle of Long Island. He was with Washington (1776-77) at Trenton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Valley Forge. In Feb., 1778, he became quartermaster general while still holding his field command; he reorganized the department, found supplies for the army, and rendered fine service in this capacity. His notable ability at organization also appeared in his fieldwork. He fought (1778) at Monmouth and in the Rhode Island campaign and was president (1780) of the court-martial board that sentenced Major John André. After Gates was defeated at Camden (1780), Greene became the commander in the Carolina campaign. He reorganized the Southern army, and he and his lieutenants (notably Daniel Morgan and Henry Lee), with aid of partisan bands under Francis Marion, Thomas Sumter, and Andrew Pickens, turned the tide in Carolina. Greene's forces were defeated at Guilford Courthouse, Hobkirks Hill, and Eutaw Springs, but each time the British victory was reversed, and he pushed south to surround Charleston until the British evacuated it (1782). The campaign is generally considered an example of excellent strategy, and Greene's generalship is much admired. To get supplies for the Continental Army, Greene often had been forced to endorse personal notes. After the war the dishonesty of a contractor forced him to sell his estates to honor those pledges. The people of Georgia, however, gave him a plantation.

Daniel Morgan, by Charles Willson Peale, from life, c. 1794

2. Daniel Morgan

Daniel Morgan, 1735-1802, American Revolutionary general, was an excellent battlefield tactician and guerrilla fighter who distinguished himself in major Revolutionary War battles. He moved (1753) to Virginia and later served in the French and Indian Wars and several campaigns against Native Americans. In the Revolution, Morgan assumed command of the attack on Quebec (see Quebec campaign) after Benedict Arnold was wounded, but Morgan himself was captured. He was exchanged (1776) and took part in the Saratoga campaign, but dissatisfied with the congressional policy of promotions, he retired in 1779. He reentered the army in 1780 and joined the Carolina campaign. Serving under Nathanael Greene, he defeated the British at Cowpens (1781). After the war he helped to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion and served (1797-99) as a U.S. Congressman.
