神奇的“-ish”

在中文里,当人们对某件事吃不准,或不愿直说的情况下,一般会用"有一点","左右"等说法。比如说"你冷吗?""有一点。""你几点走?""八点左右。"在美语里,这类说法可以加上一个词尾来解决,这个词尾就是"-ish"。我们来看下面的对话:"Shall we say that we'll meet tomorrow at 8:00 to go over these questions?"(我们能不能明天8点见一下,再复习复习这些问题?)"How about 8ish?"(8点左右如何?)"Finally that evil character in the fiction died. But wait, is he really died?"(小说里的那个坏人终于死了。哦,对了,他真的死了吗?)"Well, deadish."(半死不活吧。)"I'm so happy that you've bought me these movies. They are good movies, right?"(你能给我带来这么多电影,我真高兴。这都是好电影,对吧?)"Well, goodish."(恩,还行吧。)"Gosh, I think I've twisted my ankle jumping down from there."(哎呦!从那儿跳下来我可能崴了脚。) "Is that bad?"(严重吗?) "Baddish."(挺严重的。)只看上面几个例子,你会觉得"-ish"只能跟形容词。其实不然,在现实生活中,你常常可以听到类似的话。如:"Here is the bag I bought for you. What's the matter? I thought you liked this kind of bag. "(这是我给你买的包。怎么回事,你不是喜欢这种包吗?)"Well, likish.(动词) But…"(喜欢是有点喜欢,但是……)"Are you going to say that this is the absolute truth?"(你能说这是绝对事实吗?)"Well, truthish.(名词)"(有些是真的吧。)在刚才的两个例子中,"-ish"就先后跟了动词和名词,从而表达出说话人的真实态度,又不失委婉。其实只要你拿不准,或是想表达摸棱两可的意思,在很多情况下都可以在某个词的后面加上一个神奇的"-ish ",不但可以恰当地表达你的意思,还能让你的美语听起来更地道。
