Backhander
Neil: Hello, welcome to Real English from BBC Learning English, I'm Neil.
Neil: In Real English we look at words and phrases people use all the time, but you probably won't find in your dictionary.
Neil: So how are you today, Helen?
Helen: Well, I'm really annoyed because I got a speeding ticket!
Neil: Oh no! Helen how much is the fine?
Helen: £60!
Neil: Wow, you should have given them a backhander.
Helen: A backhander. Bribe. Are you saying I should have bribed the police? No way, Neil. That's against the law!
Neil: Speeding's against the law too, Helen!

A football manager and a match official have been arrested today on suspicion of bribery. It's alleged the referee took a backhander from the head coach of the second division side Donchester United.
Neil: We say 'to give a backhander'.
Helen: 贿赂别人的时候就可以说 to give a backhander.
Neil: And 'to take a backhander'.
Helen: 接受贿赂,受贿就是 to take a backhander.
Neil: Helen, would you ever take a backhander?
Helen: No, of course not!
Neil: What if I offered you a £10 backhander to finish this programme for me?
Helen: Well, OK then.
Neil: There you go. See you!
