我国的孙悟空有一个神通:他只要“拔毫毛一把，丢在口中嚼碎了，喷将出去，叫声『变』，就变了千百个大圣”(《西游记》第五回)。这千百个化身都跟孙悟空本身一模一样，名副其实是他的spitting images了。Spitting images直译是“从嘴里吐出来的化身”，意译则是“一模一样的人”，也作spit and image。至于酷似对方为什么就像是从对方口里吐出来，可没有人能够解释清楚，于是，有人认为spit and image本来应作spirit and image，指性格上(spirit)、外表上(image)都相像。这解释固然合情合理，不过，人们现在就是不说spirit and image，只说spitting image、spit and image、dead spit of，或very spit of，例如:Tom is the spitting image/spit and image/dead spit/very spit of his father(汤姆长得和他父亲一模样)。
