We have been to every other city besides Tokyo. 除了到過東京, 我們還到過其他所有的城市. ------------------------------------------------------------    此句不能譯作:"除了東京之外, 其他的城市我們都到過了." 如要表達此意, 應該說:    We have been to every other city than Tokyo.    介詞besides的涵義是in addition to, as well as(除了..., 還...); 而連詞than在后一句中表示except的意思, 即:"除了(沒有)...之外...都". 因此, 上面兩個句子的涵義是大不相同的. 再請看下面的類例:    They have harvested the peanuts besides the rice.    除了收獲稻子,他們還收了花生.    (比較)They have gathered all the crops except peanuts.          除了花生還沒收, 他們把全部農作物都收割好了.    We have received other presents besides letters.    除了收到一封信, 我們還收到了其他的禮物.    (比較)We have received presents other than letters.          我們所收到的是禮物而不是信.        besides在不同的句子中, 可以表達不同的涵義. 有時候, 它的意思是"除了..., (尚有...)"; 有時候卻表示"除了...之外, (不再有...)". 度比較下列兩個句中besides 的不同涵義:    The new-type computer has many other advantages besides lower cost.    除了成本較低, 這種新型的電腦還有許多其他的優點.    We have no other computers besides this giant general-purpose transistorized digital one.    除了這台晶體管大型通用數字電腦之外, 我們沒有別的電腦了.    為什么besides會表示兩種截然不同的涵義呢?因為besides這個字用于否定句(如上句)和疑問句時, 與except同義, 作"除了...之外, (不再有...)"解. 例如:    I've no dictionaries besides these two.    除了這兩本外, 我沒有其他的詞典了.    I care for nothing besides this.    除了這個以外, 我什么都不要.    What has he done, besides reading the report?    除了閱讀這份報告之外, 他還干了一些什么呢?    還有一點應當在此指出, besides用作介詞時, 其后可以接名詞,從句,動名詞, 此外尚可接不帶"to"的動詞不定式(但它前面的動詞必須是"do"). 例如上面最后一個例句可以改寫為:    What has he done besides read the report?
