Stinge
Neil: Hello, welcome to Real English from BBC Learning English, I'm Neil.
Neil: In Real English we look at words and phrases people use all the time which you might not find in your dictionary.
Are you alright Neil?
Neil: Well, not really. It's my brother's birthday next week and I need to buy him a present.
Feifei: What's wrong with that?
Neil: I don't really want to spend more than £2, so it's quite difficult to find something good.
Feifei: £2! Don't be such a stinge! Neil
Neil: Well, he's a bigger stinge than me. Last year, he only spent a pound on my birthday!
He's a real stinge.
Neil: A stinge is a person who doesn't like to spend much money. They always buy the cheapest thing possible.
Example
A: Isn't it your wedding anniversary soon? Are you expecting to go out for a nice meal?
B: Ha! You must be joking. My husband's such a stinge we'll probably end up at McDonalds.
Neil: Her husband's going to take her to McDonalds for their wedding anniversary. That's so stingy.
Feifei: Stingy.
Neil: So, you can say he's stingy, or he's a stingy man, or he's a stinge.
Feifei: Anyway Neil, where's my birthday present?
Neil: Your birthday present? Ha! Forget it!
Feifei: You really are a stinge, aren't you? See you next time.
