Business English - Dressing for Success at an Interview

Michael: Hi, Billy. You're a little tardy to work this morning.

Billy: I know. I rushed here straight from a job interview.

Michael: Is that why you have your Sunday best on today?

Billy: Dressing for Success!

Michael: First impressions are very important, especially at a job interview.

Billy: You have hit the nail on the head, Michael.

Michael: So, did you get the job?

Billy: I don't know yet. They said that they would call me back later this week.

Michael: If they make the decision based on your fashion sense, I am sure they will give the job to you.

 NEW WORDS 新单词

1) Tardy: late, not on time
Being on time to an appointment or work is polite; being tardy is bad manners.

2) Sunday best: your best outfit, a nice suit
People used to have a special set of good clothes just to go to church on Sunday.

3) First impressions: what people think of each other the first time they meet
If you don't make a good first impression on somebody, it can be difficult for them to change their mind about you in the future!

"You don't get a second chance to make a first impression." This is an old saying that means that how people perceive you the first time you meet is very important. Maybe it is wrong to make a quick judgment about a person as soon as you meet them, but we live in a fast-paced world where people make quick decisions all the time.

It is especially important to make a good first impression at a job interview. The person making the hiring decision may interview hundreds of people and it is your responsibility to make sure that they remember you (for good reasons!).

If you have time before the job interview, visit the company and try to see how other staff dress. If it is a casual office, it might be a good idea to leave your three-piece suit at home and wear some fashionable pants instead. But don't wear jeans to an interview if the office dress code is very conservative.

Think about these fashion tips for job interviews:

WOMEN

Wear a solid color conservative dress or suit.
Avoid open toe, sling back or stiletto shoes.
Be conservative in your jewelry. Avoid big earrings, and things that jingle.
Wear nude or tan hose. Avoid patterns and bright colors.
Hair should be kept neatly combed, not hanging in the face.
Keep make-up light and natural.
Do not over perfume.

MEN

Wear a suit (navy, gray or charcoal) with a white shirt neatly pressed.
Keep ties conservative (no Mickey Mouse patterns or ties with flashing lights!).
Wear dark, long socks that match the suit.
Wear black leather shoes (wingtips or loafers) that are polished. No boots.
Minimal jewelry - watch, wedding ring and school rings are acceptable.
Get a conservative haircut - collar length, above the ears, neatly combed.
Be either clean-shaven or have neatly trimmed facial hair.

And as always, remember to:
. have a firm handshake, but do not over do it (breaking the interviewer's hand is not a good way to start)
. maintain eye contact at all times
. and always wear a smile!

First impressions count! Make the most of the first four or five seconds whenever you meet someone to really make a strong, positive lasting impression.

Dialogue - 对话

Jeff: Where have you been for the last hour, Joan?

Joan: I was helping to interview someone.

Jeff: Are you applying for a new job?

Joan: No! I was the person asking the questions.

Jeff: That's sounds like fun. Did you offer the person the job?

Joan: Not yet. We will have two or three rounds of interviews to make sure we get the best person for the job.

Jeff: Did they make a good first impression?

Joan: We wouldn't be asking them back for a second interview if they hadn't!
